After making it out of the rainforest, Holm, Luciana, and I all returned to the police station. It was late, and we were all injured and exhausted, but I didn’t want to call it a night before we’d at least had a chance to have a meeting and assess the situation. However, before we did any of that, I needed to call Dr. Slade. Fortunately, Holm had found my phone where I’d dropped it beside the entrance to the mine and had brought it back to the station for me. After retrieving it, I escaped to a quiet, unoccupied break room, closing the door before calling Slade back. Everything Jimenez had told us about being wary of who we trusted even among the police was fresh in my mind, and even though Slade wasn’t related to our current case, I didn’t want to risk anyone overhearing me.

I waited anxiously as the phone rang. In the still silence of the empty break room, the soft noise sounded almost painful against my ear, mocking me as it repeatedly rang just to go to voicemail. I quickly hung up and called again. Slade had sounded so distressed, so in pain, that I couldn’t just leave a message and hope for the best. Unfortunately, it seemed like I might not have much of a choice because even after the third call, Dr. Slade wouldn’t answer.

An unpleasant feeling settled into the pit of my stomach as I gave up and pulled the phone away from my ear. What the hell had happened? I tried to remember exactly what Slade had said, but it was difficult. We’d been attacked in the middle of the call, and I’d been so focused on the ambush that I could barely recall Slade’s words now. Something about a man with a gun, that much I was certain. Who could he have been talking about? And why call me about it instead of the police?

After a moment of tormented deliberation, I decided to call Diane. I needed to let her know what had happened anyway, and she might be able to do something about Slade. She, at least, was in the same country at the moment.

“Hello?” Diane answered after just two rings. “Ethan? It’s late. Is everything alright?”

“No,” I replied tersely. “Not at all.” I gave her an expedited explanation then, both over what had happened with Montoya and the mine and my mysterious phone call with Dr. Slade.

“I’m not sure what he was talking about,” I murmured. “I didn’t have a chance to ask him. We were attacked before I could.”

“I’ll contact the police in New York,” Diane replied. “I’ll make sure they send someone out to do a welfare check, at the very least.”

“Thanks, Diane,” I replied, relief washing over me.

“Of course,” she replied. “But about what’s happening there, are you sure you’re alright? Have you been to the hospital?”

“Not yet,” I replied. “I’ll go as soon as we find Norman.”

“Marston,” Diane replied in a harsh tone that spoke volumes.
